There is so much conflicting health advice and information on what to eat. How can you tune into your body and figure out what’s really best for you?
In this episode I talk about how an elimination diet creates an excellent baseline for discovering what foods help you feel your best. I also explain how to properly reintroduce foods and how you should handle foods that do not agree with you.
One diet I found works very well as an elimination diet is the Auto-Immune Paleo diet or AI Paleo. I have had patients on this diet anywhere from one to twelve weeks, depending on their health. When you start an elimination diet such as AI Paleo, you get a baseline for how you feel when eating “clean”. When you reintroduce foods after the diet, you can then pay attention to whether or not they agree with you.
Note that the foods you eat may not impact you right away. Sometimes negative symptoms like bloating, brain fog or changes in stool can appear up to three days after you’ve eaten them. This is why I the reintroduction after elimination is so vital. Reintroducing each food group slowly and methodically, so you can really get a sense of how that food affects you. If you find a food causes physical discomfort or changes your mood, take it out of your diet completely for at least one month before trying it out again.
