Digestive enzymes. One of the most frequently used supplements when it comes to digestive health. In this diary I answer some basic questions: What is a Digestive Enzyme? Why do I need it? Which one should I use? How do I take them?

I’ll give you a bulleted list of answers to these questions and you can watch the diary to learn more!

– A digestive enzyme is a nutritional supplement that is taken to help our bodies break down large chunks of food into smaller bits that we can utilize for fuel. Our bodies make their own enzymes but many people have a decrease in the production of these enzymes throughout life from various factors such as aging, poor diet, medications and a weak microbiome ( the beneficial microbes that live in our intestines).

– If we lack these enzymes we don’t easily break down our foods and the undigested food can irritate our digestive tract and we lose the benefits of the nourishing foods that we’re eating.

-There are so many digestive enzymes on the market and I don’t believe that there is one that is better than all the rest. I’ve been recently taking Similase GFCF made by Integrative Therapeutics. It’s a specialized enzyme designed for the person that has a hard time digesting gluten (a protein in wheat, rye and barley) and casein (a protein in milk).

-It’s best to find the right enzyme for you personally, so a health practitioner that is familiar with your history is the best person to help you find the right one. I discuss a few enzyme ingredients and what they are used for in the diary. Other great ones I use in my office are Nutrizyme by American Nutraceuticals and the Spectrazyme line from Metagenics.

You have a lot of freedom in how you take most enzymes. I recommend taking them right before a meal to help you when you know that you are eating something that doesn’t necessarily agree with you or in between meals (1 hour before or 2 hours after) when you notice a little bloat or indigestion.

I’ll say it again: It’s always best to work with a knowledgeable health practitioner rather than experimenting on your own, BUT I know that these supplements are readily available and a lot of people are going to try them. Watch the video for my two cents.
